YouTube was launched in 2005 with the intention of being an online dating service that allowed users to upload videos. While the dating element of the site failed, the video uploading technology was a hit. In November 2006, YouTube was acquired by Google for $1.65 billion, securing the deal ahead of other would-be buyers including Yahoo, Viacom and Microsoft. YouTube has grown rapidly over the years to become the 2nd most visited website in the world behind Google.
