The World’s Tallest Buildings

Much like the Rapa Nui societies that inhabited Easter Island prior to European contact, who built larger and larger moais 🗿, countries are now competing with each other to construct the world’s tallest buildings. The rationale is no different to what it was in ancient times; prestige.

The Petronas Towers of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was the world’s largest building from 1998 to 2004, after which the Taipei 101 building in Taiwan held the record until 2009. The current world’s tallest building, the then Burj Dubai, and later renamed the Burj Khalifa, is 2,717 ft high. Neither the Petronas Towers nor the Taipei 101 building are in the top 10 world’s tallest buildings anymore.

The world’s tallest buildings are:

  1. Burj Khalifa, United Arab Emirates, 2717 ft
  2. Merdeka 118, Malaysia, 2227 ft
  3. Shanghai Tower, China, 2073 ft
  4. Abraj Al-Bait Clock Tower, Saudi Arabia, 1972 ft
  5. Ping An International Finance Centre, China, 1966 ft
  6. Lotte World Tower, South Korea, 1819 ft
  7. One World Trade Center, USA, 1776 ft
  8. Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre, China, 1739 ft
  9. Tianjin CTF Finance Centre, China, 1739 ft
  10. China Zun, China, 1731 ft
