The 10 most respected professions worldwide are:
- Scientist
- Medical Doctor
- Architect
- Senior Manager in a large company
- Lawyer
- Graphic Designer
- Teacher
- Athlete
- Musician
- Nurse
This ranking is based on an international survey conducted by YouGov in which 22,000 people in 16 countries were asked how they would feel if their child went into a specified job. Some notable limitations of this survey are:
i) There is a difference between wanting your child to pursue a particular career and the respect you hold for a job. For example, you may highly respect the work of a doctor but may not necessarily want your child to become one.
ii) The jobs specified in the YouGov survey were limited to 24 jobs. We therefore are unable to tell if there are other professions that are more or less respected than those specified.
iii) The YouGov survey polled 16 countries, which arguably is not indicative of worldwide sentiment. Can we say that doctors are the most respected profession worldwide if only 16 countries were polled? Also no country in Africa or South America was polled.
