Protecting stores from shoplifters

Retail theft is becoming a big problem; a $100 billion problem to be exact, as this is the amount retailers are losing out on because of shoplifting. It’s been reported that 10% of Americans shoplift with some degree of regularity. To combat theft, a variety of methods are utilised such as CCTV cameras, strategic mirror placement and hiring security guards. Some stores, however, are taking a more ‘preventative’ approach.

Above is an image of a backpack that’s been tied shut by a security guard at a supermarket in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. If you can’t hide stuff in your bag, it’s much harder to shoplift. Once shoppers have done their shopping and paid for their items, another security guard cuts the plastic tag and you can be on your way. It’s not the most environmentally friendly way to prevent shoplifting, but it is effective.
