Professional Wrestling Most World Title Reigns – WWE, WCW, NWA

The Nature Boy, Ric Flair, and John Cena, who you probably can’t see, together hold the record for the highest number of world title reigns in professional wrestling. Flair has held the NWA title 8 times, the WCW title 6 times and the WWE title twice. Cena’s titles have been entirely within the WWE, holding the World Heavyweight Championship twice and the WWE title 13 times.

Others on the list are wrestlers one wouldn’t expect to be there, particularly if you look at the earlier parts of their careers. Triple H’s push, for example, was temporarily taken away after the Curtain Call Incident in May 1996, when the Kliq broke character and hugged in the ring. As Kevin Nash and Scott Hall were leaving for WCW, and Shawn Michaels was the current WWE champion, the punishment fell onto Triple H.

Also of note is that the number of title reigns doesn’t necessarily correlate with perceptions of greatness. Many people believe Stone Cold Steve Austin to be the greatest professional wrestler of all time, yet he isn’t even in the top 10 of world title holders. Other greats such as the Undertaker and Bret Hart similarly don’t make the list.
