We’ve previously written about Kepulauan Seribu or the Thousand Islands as an alternative island getaway to Bali if you happen to be in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. Depending on what you’re after, there are a range of experiences the islands can offer. Some islands are well developed, offering high standard hotels and pristine beaches whereas others are less developed but provide basic accommodation needs if you’re more interested in spending money on activities such as snorkelling and riding a banana boat!
If you’re visiting Harapan Island, the capital of the administrative village of Pulau Harapan, a tour agency may take you to a visit of Bulat Island. Bulat Island is a privately owned island within the 30-island administrative village that people visit for amazing views, clear waters and sunset watching.
Bulat Island was once the private island of former Indonesian President Suharto. His private home is now abandoned and displays remnants of what was once a luxurious property away from bustle of Jakarta.
Generally Bulat Island appears to have been abandoned, though some have spotted guards still on duty. President Suharto announced his resignation on 21 May 1998 after widespread protests against corruption and economic mismanagement.
