When it comes to Indonesia, Bali is often the location tourists consider if they’re looking for a beach getaway. Lombok and the Gili Islands are also gaining more recognition as an alternative to the increasingly crowded and frequently visited Bali. However if you’re in the bustling metropolis of Jakarta, a beach getaway doesn’t have to be a flight away.
North of Jakarta’s coastline are the Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu), a chain of 342 islands, some of which are privately owned or uninhabited. Those that are developed for tourism offer a more than worthy substitute to the traditional choice of Bali, particularly if time is short. Taking a boat or speedboat can be a quick affair or a relaxing sojourn of a few hours, depending on budget and preference.

Pari Island (Pulai Pari) is an example of an island that surpasses expectations with its crystal clear waters and idyllic, sandy beaches. There’s plenty of opportunity to take part in water sports, go for a swim or simply take in the sunshine and clean air. Given the proximity of the Thousand Islands, one can visit for a day trip or stay for a few days in the numerous hotels dotted around the various islands. When visiting the Thousand Islands for the first time, many tourists are pleasantly surprised to learn how pristine beaches are on the very doorstep of Jakarta.
