With a name like ‘Game & Watch’, one would probably think the handheld device shown in the image above provided gaming and video-playing capabilities. The ad, however, is from 1989 and we hadn’t quite reached the stage of video streaming just yet. The ‘Watch’ referred to a digital clock, which was a popular addition to a gaming handheld device back then.
The Nintendo ‘Game & Watch’ had a single game programmed into it such as Donkey Kong or Super Mario Bros, and at the time of the 1989 ad, there were 24 titles to choose from.
The product line was discontinued in 1991, following the release of the Game Boy in 1989, which provided much more gaming variety.
