Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is one of the most iconic games of the early 2000s, released in 2002 to critical acclaim (and controversy!). Grand Theft Auto III had set the bar very high following the 2D versions of GTA and GTA 2. However despite the sky-high expectations, Vice City delivered. It was an exceptional game.
For those new to the PlayStation 2 or to the GTA series, Vice City showed gamers something they weren’t used to. The map was huge! You could explore to your heart’s content and do some pretty cool things too, from driving a sports car to flying a helicopter. The 1980s soundtrack complimented the imaginative storyline, which was set in 1986. Many conversations among gamers at the time centred on what they’d been up to in Vice City, very often surprising each other about the novel capabilities of the game. You did what!? I didn’t even know you could do that!
Upon its release Grand Theft Auto: Vice City became the fastest selling game in history at the time and the best selling video game worldwide in 2002.
