Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands approximately 30km off the coast of north-western Malaysia. Langkawi falls within Malaysia’s Kedah district and its largest island, also named Langkawi, is home to Eagle Square or Dataran Helang.
The island’s name possibly originated from the word ‘eagle’ in Malay – helang – and the popular tourist spot, Eagle Square, is based on this association. One can gaze at an impressive structure of an eagle with its wings extended in flight as well as look out into the waters as ferries sail calmly through the Strait of Malacca.
